A pdf document has become the De facto standard for the majority of manufacturer's marketing departments because it enables them to better control the distribution of the published specification for their product. The pdf file format is not easily editable, the content is always rendered the same way no matter what device it is viewed on and most computer users can open the files with free to download reader software such as Adobe Reader.
Since pdf files have to be downloaded they are not very web browsing friendly. Some pdf files can be many megabytes in size and take a relatively long time to download compared to a web page. For these reasons search engines do not like to show links to pdf files in their search results unless it is absolutely necessary. So if you happen to be searching for a pdf for a particular product it is often a slow process trawling through websites to find a relevant product page, with the hope that it will contain a pdf link to the specification data sheet.
If you want the Search Engine to focus on finding the pdf file you will need to instruct it to only return results for pdf files. It is very easy to do this on Google by using the following search terms and operators:
"Manufacturer" +"Product" filetype:pdf
This will ensure, that only results containing a link to a pdf which includes the product's and manufacturer's name will be shown. The first search result will most likely link to the pdf data sheet on the manufacturer's website which should also be the most up to date version if their website is well maintained.
It is best to avoid using the full product part number, since a data sheet will normally show you how to build up a part number from a product option tree but will rarely show a list of full part numbers. Instead we suggest using the product series name which will most likely be included in the title or the text content of the pdf file.
For example this is what you would enter into Google to search for a Rosemount 1151 pressure transmitter specification data sheet:
